Design team taps WKU student

A college senior from Western Kentucky has been selected to work on a global design project to create a wind-powered water purifier to benefit impoverished areas that lack electricity.

Zach Pearl, who is studying mechanical engineering at Western Kentucky University, is part of the five-member team contributing to the project from around the world.

"Something like this could possibly be used where there isn't a safe source of drinking water," Pearl said. "This could save lives."

The research is still in early stages, he said, but the group is using computer-generated conceptual drawings to examine the possibility of harnessing wind power.

It's not Pearl's first attempt to design a water purification system. Last year he was part of a team that created a water purification system powered by pedals on a bicycle.

Michael Pointer: Purdue Q&A

Question: When will the Purdue quarterback actually look off his primary receiver and go through his progressions? From what I saw Saturday, come-heck-or-high-water, Curtis Painter is going to throw to his primary, even if there is a crowd. And, on two of those interceptions, no Boiler receiver was in the area. I haven't seen anyone say that a receiver zigged when he should have zagged. Were those interceptions all on Painter? Quotes from coaches and Painter seem to suggest so. (Mike from Kokomo)

Answer: Mike, I have covered four quarterbacks since I've been on the Purdue beat: Brandon Hance, Kyle Orton, Brandon Kirsch and Painter. (I missed having the pleasure of covering Drew Brees.) I heard that complaint about everyone of them, including Orton, who had 31 touchdown passes and just five interceptions as a starter.

plagues Delaware's Inland Bays

Improving wastewater treatment and reducing other point-source polluters has decreased phosphorous and nitrogen levels in the Inland Bays. Still, for more than 15 years, monitors have seen no decrease in nutrient pollutants in the bays. Of the three Inland Bays, only Rehoboth Bay is meeting recommended allowable levels of pollution.

The members of the Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) to the Center for the Inland Bays (CIB) heard an update on water quality as part of their meeting Tuesday, Jan. 8.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) collects samples from the Inland Bays four times a year, measures the concentration of pollutants and then issues data in five-year sets. Rehoboth Bay meets the state’s standards for both phosphorous and nitrogen, known as total maximum daily loads (TMDLS).

Half of Scots see Muslims as 'cultural threat' in wake of terrorist ...

Canada, South Africa, Australia, Sri Lanka and Middle east have expats living there who openly proclaim their low tolerance of others race or religion.

We have thousands of English People migrating to Scotland on a monthly basis. They love it up here and to me if they truly feel that then they are most welcome. I do not seperate that opinion from English People if they happen to be Muslims. Welcome to Scotland. All I ask is that you love Scotland as much as I do, and besides your love of your new country, I dont give a rats about your religion providing you accept religion as a peacefull persuit that you keep as a personal thing to you.

Honour killings and forced Marriages are not part of our culture. Equality for women is not negotable, it is a must. Scottish Law must be accepted as the way that an individuals guilt or innocence is determined.
